Among the many interesting challenges my job seekers have faced this past year is how to talk about AI on a resume. A question that I answered this morning:
If the company you work for is integrating AI into operations, and you're applying to a company that doesn't mention AI in the job posting or company website, is it worth including the AI integration on your resume?
I thought it was a great question. After all, aren't resume writers always talking about tailoring every resume to each job you apply to? And wouldn't that mean we should leave off AI if the job posting isn't asking for it?
My answer reflects the way that I write my resumes: it all depends on the vision your potential employer is gravitating towards, and how you, as an employee, could fit into that vision.
1. There is a curiosity about AI that hasn't let go of its grip in the business world. Even among employers who claim to distance themselves from AI as their differentiator, the question still hangs in the air as to how it's going to change the future of work. As a new employee, even if your function isn't utilizing AI at the moment, the knowledge you carry about AI will be intriguing.
2. The best resumes are tactical and inspirational. They show how you've been an asset in the past, and they give employers a taste of how you'll benefit them in the future. That taste drives desire, and that desire is what causes employers to covet an individual for their company. When you land an interview, that landing has nothing to do with how well you align with the job description. It's all about the employer coveting you and what you bring to the table.
3. How might you fit into the company's vision? An online search can show you what the employer is interested in right now. What are they blogging about? What are they saying in their quarterly earnings reports? What are managers and colleagues posting on LinkedIn? Are they speaking at conferences? Are they publishing videos on YouTube? What blue oceans might they be pursuing, and how could you, with your AI experience, contribute to the pursuit?
